Leopold Fitz, more commonly referred to as Leo or even just Fitz depending on the situation. He's a genius. No... Really he is. He met his research partner, Jemma Simmons as they both attended the same university. They both have multiple doctorates although Fitz's specialties lie in the Engineering department. Once he and Simmons met, they became inseparable. They each filled the void in each other's research and worked well together. Not that they weren't without their arguments. They soon became known collectively as Fitz-Simmons. After they each graduated university, they entered the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology. Professor Vaughn in particular recognized Fitz's quick thinking skills and adaptability but when he and Simmons graduated from the academy 3 years early, still advised that they go for a lab position. It was Jemma who insisted the go for a field position and it led to some interesting situations. Before Fitz ever met Coulson or became a part of his team, he became well known for inventing some of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s gadgetry. He's known as an attractive nerd, much to his own embarrassment. He is also a little bit socially awkward. This version of Fitz comes from before the series ever happened so he's not as hardened as we've seen in the series thus far. He's quite content to stay in the lab and work on his inventions with Simmons. She's the only female that he is consistently less awkward around and even that took a while for Fitz to get used to. She often pushes him a bit further than he would normally go and despite being annoyed with it, inside he is pretty grateful. They wouldn't be where they are today without each other.
